Loyalty Day Tribute by Phil Moreno

May 1st is a special day to remember "what freedom is about, the loyalty of our citizens and those in uniform of all Armed Forces active and inactive," remarked Post Commander, Angel Vasquez, Jr., during the opening ceremony. The Post Adjutant, Phil Moreno, presiding over the ceremony reminded those in attendance that " America is a great nation! We stand tall and proud to be Americans. Let us never forget!"

For many... our freedom is valued and for others it is just taken for granted. But this was a day to remind everyone that "freedom is not free, and the many sacrifices of our Armed Services, especially those that have given their lives in pursuit of dreams of peace and tranquility continues today, this very moment."

Moreno went on to inform the audience that everyone, men and women, especially our young adults, should be inspired by the patriotic service of the men and women who have sworn to protect our country, to serve our Nation with honor and decency. "Today, we are proud of our service members that have joined us on this beautiful afternoon to celebrate Loyalty Day," Moreno also did not forget others as he stated, "We, the members of the Oldest VFW Post in Texas, pay tribute to all our fallen comrades, members that are no longer with us, and remind ourselves daily of our motto, remember our dead by helping the living."

The Armed Forces flags were lowered by representatives from each service; the U.S. Army; U.S. Marines; U.S. Navy; U.S. Air Force; and the U.S. Coast Guard. Photo Below: Marines SGT Kirk Eagleston & SGT Julio Meza Medina; US Navy Seaman Recruit Nathan Shoudy & Seaman Recruit Jerry Brooks, and Jason Kennedy; USAF SSG Esparza; US Coast Guard Petty Officer Dan Garcia & Petty Officer Gregg Isnardi, and assisting Senior Chief Laro Garza. Also, first photo, asisting, VFW Members Bobby Rodriquez & Albert Mireles. U.S. Army, Staff Sergeant, Roxanne De Palm, presided over the flag detail (4th photo below). The service flags were retired and replaced with new flags. The VFW Post 76 Honor Guard led by Ron Oglivie led the military honors with a 21-Gun salute and as TAPS sounded off...everyone seemed to come to terms with reality of what this day meant.  In many ways, it was humbling, it was a state of sadness, but, also many realized that once again we stood proud and united, never forgetting of what this tribute was all about. It was truly a proud moment.

Finally, two citizens of San Antonio were recognized, as Moreno stated, "these two individuals personify dedication, loyalty, and support of the Veterans of Foreign War core values.  The two honored guest; Ms. Delia (Dee) Casias and Ms. Maria (Mari) A. Gutierrez, were presented Post Certificates of Recognition and Honor, a framed Post photo, and cash award (last photos below).

VFW Post 76 "Remembers 9/11" by Phil Moreno On September 11, 2001, many Americans viewed the television in horror as two jet airliners plowed into the Twin Towers.  Veterans knew immediately that this day would remain embedded in our hearts and minds.  So much tragedy, death, pain, sadness and tears all put in one big boiling pot for all Americans to see, hear, and remember!

VFW Post 76, the "Oldest VFW Post in the State of Texas" has not forgotten.  And, on September 11, 2009 we will still remember as we pay tribute to those that weren't fortunate to see another day.  Many lives were lost on September 11, 2001 and we will honor them and their loved ones.

The tribute ceremony will take place at 6 pm, September 11, 2009 (Friday).  Please attend the Eighth Anniversary of one of our country's worst tragedies in its history.

Who Was Ed Freeman?

There’s not a day that goes by that an email is received requesting the forwarding of an email to the next person, and, you know the rest of the story. (NOTE:  For more information regarding the MOH presentation and other info, please google his name or use the search engine. ) But this is an interesting write-up, although, the author is “unknown,” someone wanted to make sure that the memory of “Ed Freeman” was not forgotten.  So, thanks to Larry Wereline, a Life Time member of VFW Post 76, here’s what he sent:

You're an 19 year old kid. You're critically wounded, and dying in the jungle in the la Drang Valley, November 14, 1965, LZ X-ray, Vietnam. Your infantry unit is outnumbered 8 - 1, and the enemy fire is so intense, from 100 or 200 yards away, that your own Infantry Commander has ordered thdiVac helicopters to stop coming in.

Then, over the machine gun noise, you faintly hear that sound of a helicopter, and you look up to see an un-armed Huey, but it doesn't seem real, because no MediVac markings are on it.

Captain Ed Freeman is coming for you. He's not MediVac, so it's not his job, but he's flying his Huey down into the machine gun fire, after the MediVacs were ordered not to come.

He's coming anyway! And he drops it in, and sits there in the machine gun fire, as they load 2 or 3 of you on board. Then he flies you up and out through the gunfire, to the doctors and nurses..And, he kept coming back.... 13 more times..... And took about 30 of you and your buddies out, who would never have gotten out.Medal of Honor recipient, Major Ed Freeman, died Wednesday, August 20, 2008, at the age of 80, in Boise, ID,…May God rest his soul! None of this is Hollywood fiction.

Post By-Laws Ratified by Phil Moreno

What many members are unaware of and this applies to many folks... "VFW Post 76 since its inception sometime in June 1917 never adopted Post By-laws."  Yes, we do have a charter, but, to this date "no official Post By-Laws."

The Post solely operated by a Post House Regulation dated August 1986, and was applicable only in operating and managing the Post Canteen. Yet, we, or should I say many VFW members throughout our nation are aware that we fall under National By-Laws that govern all Posts, Districts, and Departments.

Our Post was in much need of by-laws.  By-laws are essential in our existence as it informs our members of how we operate, identify our standing committees, and other items that inform the member to seek Department (Texas) or National By-Law direction.

In the evening of March 10, 2009 will be remembered as a "historical ground-breaking night" as the membership ratified the VFW Post 76, "the Oldest VFW in the State of Texas," By-Laws.  The Chair, By-Laws Committee, Tony Vasquez and assisted by Comrade Phil Moreno, introduced the by-laws.  Our Post Judge Advocate, Comrade Norbert Hart, will make the minor changes voted by the membership prior to authentication.  Then, the Post By-laws will be forwarded to State for review, then, sent to VFW National Headquarters for approval.

Once approved by National the Post will still have much work in developing a House Committee to oversee the Post Canteen, club activities, and its maintenance requirements.  And, at the same time elected officers will be responsible to oversee the VFW programs, such as:  Youth, Americanism, community activities, Voice of Democracy, Patriot Pen, and Teacher of the Year.  There are many other programs that each Post is required to complete every year, and every year we either manage to stay "above water" or as last year, achieved "All State and All American" awards.

Now, all members, with the ratification of our Post By-Laws, will know exactly what the Post is responsible for and associated duties.

San Antonio's Officer Darreyl Tonne Recognized by VFW National HQs...

On July 3, 2008, VFW Post 76 presented Officer Darreyl Tonne, a San Antonio Federal Drug Agent, with the National Life Saving Award for his heroic actions. While many were unaware of Tonne's life saving actions many at the same time wouldn't have attempted what he did.

Officer Tonne, while assigned to a temporary duty with the U.S. Embassy, Kingston, Jamaica, and during his off-duty disregarded his own life to save five teenagers from drowning. The forty-one year old officer did not hesitate to come to the aide of the teenagers that were swept away in the Jamaican sea waters.

Tonne immediately realized they were in trouble and swam toward them to keep them afloat until rescuers arrived.

Officer Tonne, assigned to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Department, was nominated by VFW Post 76 to receive the National Life Saving Award by VFW National HQs. In the eyes of many veterans..."Officer Tonne is a true hero." He epitomizes a worthiness and degree of sacrifice for others that is seldom is displayed by many. VFW Post 76 salutes him!
